a day in the mountains is worth a thousand in the city...

"Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So... get on your way."
- Dr. Seuss -

"Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountain is going home; that wildness is necessity; that mountain parks and reservations are useful not only as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as fountains of life."
- John Muir -

"The world is mud-luscious and puddle-wonderful."
- e.e. cummings-

Short is the little time which remains to thee of life. Live as on a mountain. - Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

If you don't let go, you can't fall off! - Jerry Moffat

To qualify for mountain rescue work, you have to pass our test. The doctor holds a flashlight to your ear. If he can see light coming out the other one, you qualify. - Willi Pfisterer

“I've learned that everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you're climbing it.”

“The heights charm us, but the steps do not; with the mountain in our view we love to walk the plains.”

The lowpoint of my life was googling "Mountain quotes" and spending a half hour mining hundreds of quotes for the chosen ones above ... If I don't get 10 blogosphere points for spending a half hour searching for those quotes I promise on my life I will never read this blog again ...

"Dark spruce forest frowned on either side the frozen waterway. The trees had been stripped by a recent wind of their white covering of frost, and they seemed to lean towards each other, black and ominous, in the fading light. A vast silence reigned over the land. The land itself was a desolation, lifeless, without movement, so lone and cold that the spirit of it was not even that of sadness. There was a hint in it of laughter, but of a laughter more terrible than any sadness -- a laughter that was mirthless as the smile of the Sphinx, a laughter cold as the frost and partaking of the grimness of infallibility. It was the masterful and incommunicable wisdom of eternity laughing at the futility of life and the effort of life. It was the Wild, the savage, frozen-hearted Northland Wild."

Jack London, White Fang

"That wonderful world of high mountains, dazzling in their rock and ice, acts as a catalyst. It suggests the infinite but it is not the infinite. The heights only give us what we ourselves bring them."

Lucien Devies (French mountaineer)

"In the midst of such beauty, pierced with its rays, one's body is all one tingling palate. Who wouldn't be a mountaineer! Up here all the world's prizes seem nothing."

John Muir

"The mountains are calling and I must go."

John Muir

PS - The following quotes should probably be disqualified b/c they are from the Bible, and that's just an unfair advantage:

As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds his people both now and forevermore.
Psalm 125:2

Let the rivers clap their hands, Let the mountains sing together for joy
Psalm 98:8

Best mountain quote is already on your wall:

"molehills is what we got in kentucky. ain't no mountains. dang ma, washin'ton they's got dem real McCoy." - Ben Taylor ... who done traveled all the way here from Kentucky

As a resident of Kentuckiana, the only amendment I would make is "caintuck" instead of "Kentucky"...but it's good. I felt like I was home.

hey, thanks for waiting until the last day in Washington to let me know the blog address.
